In Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, a public demonstration was held to protest a recent assault on a young girl by U.S. military personnel and to demand measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.
A representative from a women’s group participating in the protest stated that sexual violence, which tramples on women’s dignity, must not be tolerated. She also criticized the authorities’ response to the incident, calling it careless and dismissive of the prefecture’s residents.
The Governor of Okinawa also attended the rally, asserting that many residents of the prefecture must voice stronger opposition to the imposition of coexisting with U.S. military bases amid ongoing uncertainty.
During the event, a resolution was adopted calling on U.S. and Japanese authorities to apologize, compensate the victims, and revise the SOFA in Japan.
